World prematurity day Kangaroo Pockets sewing

17th November is the World Prematurity Day. Check video above to learn how to save lives. To celebrate this day we are making kangaroo pockets today. Mothers having their premature babies in skin to skin contact is called Kangaroo care and it is beneficial for both mother and baby to spend as much time together in skin to skin contact as possible.

How to make the kangaroo pocket?

Choose the fabric you like. Follow steps below. You can make a smaller pocket or choose a different pocket shape, it is up to you. You will need your adult to help you. If you need more assistance, find me and I’ll happily help you.

1. Measure your T-shirt

2. Transfer measure onto the fabric making a square

3. Add 2cm on each side for edges

(You can merge steps 2 and 3 if you want to)

4. Cut the fabric

5. Fold 2cm edge and pin it

6. You can use pegs instead of pins if you prefer

7. Fold and pin all 4 edges

8. Set sewing machine to zigzag, position 12

9. Set sewing machine wheel to position 12

When using the sewing machine, make sure you remove the each pin/peg before sewing the area. If the machine needle hits the pin/peg, it will break.

10. Complete all edges

11. Position the pocket on your T-shirt

12. Attach pocket with pins, place the pins well off the edge

13. Set sewing machine to setting 2

14. Set wheel to position 2

15. Attach 3 sides (left, bottom, right) of the pocket to the T-shirt, leaving the top open. Take care not to sew through both T-shirt layers!

16. When done, tie loose ends

17. After tiying, cut off loose thread

Enjoy your pocket!
